THE EDUCATION OF WOMEN“To the Farmer’s Wife” In 1901 Liberty Hyde Bailey wrote a letter to farmers’ wives requesting them to “talk back,” which led to the development of a farmers’ wives reading course similar to the already established farmers’ reading course. 2,000 women responded to the letter, a clear indication that the farm women of New York State wanted their voices to be heard.
