1896: The Battling Standards

Voters could choose from a variety of buttons to advertise Bryan’s populist message. The numbers “16-to-1” indicated support for the silver standard and its promise of an improved life for disadvantaged rural Americans. Pins in the shape of a broom and dustpan hold tiny photographs of Bryan. They allude to the Nebraskan’s reform policies, promising to clean up politics.
