1840: Hard Cider and Log Cabins

A series of campaign ribbons celebrates William Henry Harrison’s military achievements, his life as a farmer, and the fact that his father, Benjamin A. Harrison, signed the Declaration of Independence. Log cabins, barrels of hard cider, and American flags symbolically declare support for the Whig candidate. Slogans like “A frequent change of Rulers is the Soul of Republicanism” and “Keep the Ball Moving” attack Van Buren’s incumbency. The Whig Party’s Young Men’s National Convention was one of many rallies held in support for Harrison.
