Chess

Björn Gunnlaugsson. Vasa-Blød til gamans þeim er skák-spil læra vilia, úr þijdsku útlagt af mer, early nineteenth century.

This manuscript, in the hand of Björn Gunnlaugsson (1788–1876), is a translation from German. Gunnlaugsson was a teacher, astronomer, mathematician, surveyor, and prolific cartographer. The manuscript appears to have been a conveniently portable record of strategies and a document of selected historic games. Chess still plays an important role in Iceland, where the game has a strong connection with the country’s Viking legacy.
