Murray inscribed the back of this photograph to Dr. Burt Green Wilder, Cornell’s first professor of zoology, who served as a surgeon with the Massachusetts 55th Black Volunteer Regiment during the Civil War. Professor Wilder kept in touch with many of his comrades from the regiment.
