HRC’s Changing Roles
Educating Voters (cont’d)
Broader Education and Outreach
HRCF often disseminated information about issues relevant to the gay and lesbian community, though not necessarily related to a specific political candidate or emerging congressional bill. With the spread of the AIDS epidemic, HRCF started distributing a packets called “MEDPAC,” which contained up-to-the-minute, authoritative reports on the medical aspects of AIDS from major newspapers, magazines, and medical journals. In his letter introducing the first MEDPAC, HRC’s Executive Director Vic Basile wrote, “We want you to be both promptly and accurately informed.”

With the emergence of the Internet, HRC has continued this information project through “Action Alerts,” regular e-mail notifications to HRC members and supporters about emerging issues relevant to the gay and lesbian community. HRC has also started a daily webcast called “Equally Speaking.”
