COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Pamphlets mainly about or issued in New York State, on political, historical, religious, and engineering topics. Includes reprints of historical documents from the early settlement of New York State by the Dutch and the English, covering a period from about 1621-1800; polemical pamphlets, speeches, reports, and legislation concerning canals and railroads in the state, 1800s; pamphlets on social issues including temperance, the condition of the poor, and women's rights; speeches and reports on the state of New York State's finances; reprints of two speeches by 1940 Presidential candidate Wendell Willkie (1941); and pamphlets on religious issues, mainly concerning the Episcopalian and Presbyterian churches.
Titles of note include: Investigation of the charges of mismanagement and cruelty, at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, Bath, N.Y. (1883); Long Island illustrated (a guidebook published by the Long Island Railroad Company, 1900); Robert Munro (pseudonym of Charles Williamson), A description of the Genesee Country (that is, the Finger Lakes region; 1804); Report of the Special Committee on Railroads, appointed ... to investigate alleged abuses in the management of railroads chartered by the State of New York (1880); and Andrew Carnegie's college lectures (1896; the second lecture was given at Cornell University).
