Scope and content

This collection contains records from the Sibley College of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanic Arts dating 1878-1934. It contains photographs, slides, correspondence, and documents regarding students and alumni. Included in the collection are glass lantern slides; cards with contact prints made from slides; photograph of the Civil Engineering faculty (1891-1892); a group picture of the senior class of 1930, Sibley School of Mechanical Engineering (identified); three group photographs of the Class of 1905, Engineering, including Irvin Norton '05; photo of the Class of 1913 with Dean Albert William Smith belonging to Clifford A. Brown '13; bound volumes of alumni records; and correspondence (1878-1904) concerning professor John D. Morris and student charges against him of incompetence, as well as other college matters; eight mimeographed sheets of names of students who withdrew from Sibley College from February 1917 to May 1917, apparently after the U.S. entry into World War I (reason for withdrawal is listed as well as date of leaving); mimeographed biographical sketches of the seniors; three samples of personnel rating sheets, 1930; Sibley College Pocket Book for students, 1916-1917; and a copy of "American Schools of Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture: School of Marine Construction, Sibley College, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York," in Marine Engineering, May 1899, given to the Library by Robert Henry Thurston.
