ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

Thomas Kay Historical Park was a project of the Mission Mill Museum, Salem, Oregon. The Thomas Kay Woolen Mill Co. was established in 1889, with the existing mill constructed in 1896. The company closed between 1958 and 1962. The Mill Museum Corporation bought the property in 1965, with plans to restore the mill as a museum of wool technology.

Collection relates to the creation and development of the museum and park. Includes correspondence, 1967-1970, especially between Elisabeth Walton, Thomas Kay Historical Park, and James C. Hippen, Curator, Merrimack Valley Textile Museum, Lowell, Massachusetts; photographs and sketches; reports from Mr. Hippen after a consultation visit in May 1968, and from the Historic American Buildings Survey about the mill. Also includes an inventory, 1972, of machinery in the mill and histories and details of the buildings.
