The Cleveland Electric Railway Company was created by a merger of the East Cleveland, Broadway & Newburgh, Brooklyn, and South Side railway companies on May 15, 1893. The Cleveland Electic Railway Company was one of two local transit companies; the other was the Cleveland City Cable Company. These two companies controlled the streetcar industry in Cleveland, Ohio, and merged into one company in 1903.
