The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) was formed in
1888 by 19 machinists meeting in a locomotive pit in Atlanta, Georgia, calling
themselves "The Order of United Machinist and Mechanical Engineers." They remained a
secret organizaiton for many years, due to employers who were hositle toward
organized labor. By 1889 there were 40 locals established.
They changed their name to National Association of Machinists, and then changed it
again to The International Association of Machinists.
The membership has fluctuated over the years, sometimes in part due to some of the
actions they took against employers. One of the more recent strikes they began was
on September 7, 2008 when they went up against Boeing over issues of outsourcing,
job security, pay and benefits.
