The International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal, Soft Drink and Distillery
Workers was founded in 1886 and initially called the National Union of United Brewery
Workmen.
Because the majority of the membership was German, the first publications and conventions
were all done in German.
By 1886 the union became affiliated with the American Federation of Labor (AFL).
It soon became one of the first industrial unions in the U.S.
The name of the union changed many times over the years, in 1903 they called themselves
the International Union of United Brewery Workmen of America, by 1917 it was the International
Union of United Brewery and Soft Drink Workers of America, and in 1920 the union became
the International Union of United Brewery, Flour, Cereal and Soft Drink Workers of
America.
