The Geneva Federation of Labor serves as the central labor body of Geneva, N.Y. From
October 1959 to January 1967, the organization was known as the Ontario, Yates and
Wayne County Federation of Labor.
Major unions affiliated with the Federation include the Brotherhood of Carpenters
and Joiners, the International Association of Machinists, the Amalgamated Meatcutters
and Butcher Workmen, the Optical and Instrument Workers of America, the American Federation
of Grain Millers, the Bricklayers, Masons, and Plasterers' International Union of
America, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the International Brotherhood
of Electrical Workers.
The collection includes incoming letters, minute books, financial records, copies
of agreements, and various documents relating to the operation of the Geneva Federation
of Labor and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 840
(Geneva, N.Y.).
Specifically, the collection includes incoming letters to the Geneva Federation of
Labor from officers of the affiliated locals dealing with employment of non-union
workers by contracted employers (1925); jurisdictional disputes between IBEW and the
Switchmen's Union (1919); disability benefits for members of affiliated unions (1925);
expulsion of members from the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners
for membership in the Trade Union Educational League (1925); the resignation of the
Journeymen Barbers, Local 7 (1973); the "Buy American" campaign (1971); and the Labor
Committee on Justice in Northern Ireland (n.d.)
Includes, as well, a Geneva Federation of Labor account book covering the years 1951-1959,
detailing revenues and expenses of the Federation.
Also various documents relating to Geneva Federation of Labor operations, including
applications for membership; questionnaires concerning working conditions in the area;
and receipts and statements relating to Federation financial transactions (n.d.)
The IBEW, Local 840 file contains incoming letters relating to the origins of Local
840 (1918, 1966); entrance examination results (n.d.); jurisdictional disputes (1918,
1919, 1922, 1925); constitutional changes (1921); alleged mistreatment of a fair employer
by Local 840 (1924); National Joint Apprenticeship Program (1945); wage scales of
various IBEW locals since 1900 (1924); finances of the local (1945); and personnel
matters (1946). Other documents include rituals of IBEW (n.d.); by- laws of the Geneva
Federation of Labor (n.d.); agreements with local employers (1919-1938); a graph showing
union wage movements from 1937-1969; and applications for membership (n.d.).
