G. Edwards, 1748

the great white Crane from north America

signed G. Edwards, 1748

"Mr. Catesby ... was informed that great Numbers of them are seen early in the Spring, about the Mouths of Rivers, near St. Augustine in Florida, and that they retire to the Mountains in Summer. Our late Discovery of this Bird in Hudson's-Bay during the Summer, is, I think, a sufficient Proof that these are Birds of Passage, and change their Situation just as the Stork doth in Europe. ... It is a Crane of the first Magnitude and altogether different from the European Crane."
