illustrationDelivery System
We use two digital access systems for the materials. The primary access point is an image database, since the bulk of the collection consists of images of artifacts. These images are delivered on the Web via Insight software from Luna Imaging of Culver City, California. We have been successfully using the software for a number of our image collections. Six differently-sized derivative images, in JPEG and MrSid format, are available for display and zooming. The title page of printed text, such as a campaign biography of Abraham Lincoln, is also included in the Insight system as an image. The image files for the body of a printed text were used to generate an uncorrected OCR version for searching and navigation. The text and image files from which the text was generated will be added to the library’s successful Making of America (MOA) collection of fully searchable OCRed text. A link will take the user from the image database to the MOA copy of the text.

The project is also exploring the use of the ENCompass Information System from Endeavor Information Systems as a possible single point of entry for the collection. Cornell is currently developing ENCompass with Endeavor, and it holds the promise of being able to deliver both the full text and the digitized images generated for this project. Finally, we will test the feasibility of employing the Optical Music Recognition system currently under development at the Johns Hopkins University as a method of delivering computer-generated MIDI files of the scanned sheet music.
