Style Comparison

The ebullient style of John Gould is in a class by itself. These two hand-colored lithographs of  hummingbirds demonstrate his ability to bring to life those brilliantly colored aerialists in appropriate settings. Diminutive in size, capable of flying forward, backward, and even upside down, these swift, colorful visitors to our gardens and bird feeders are enchanting. Gould captured their essence beautifully in his hand-colored lithographs.

The metal engravings displayed elsewhere in this section reflect the differences in style of four outstanding artists working in America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The same birds, blue jays in one part and cardinals in the other, are presented for comparison.
