John James Audubon
1785-1851
Audubon's son, John Woodhouse Audubon (1812-1862), began publication of a
chromolithograph edition of The Birds of America in 1859. Only one volume was completed,
however, before the Civil War intervened and the project ended.
This is a print of the Rathbone warbler as it appeared in John Woodhouse Audubon's
chromolithographic edition. The Rathbone warbler was later identified as an immature
yellow warbler, not a new species as Audubon thought. The manuscript
is Audubon's own hand, describing the warbler.
