John H. Hill

Little is known about John H. Hill, the artist who early in the 19th century prepared wood engravings for Thomas Nuttall's Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada. His work exemplifies how wood engravings were used for ornithological illustration in that era, that is, as an accompaniment to descriptive text rather than as an artistic display in themselves.
