François Le Vaillant
1753-1824
François LeVaillant visited Africa personally to observe the habits and collect
specimens of the birds of that continent. The result was his handsome six-volume
Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique (1799-1808). The combination of a detailed
and interestingly written text with beautiful colored plates distinguishes this impressive
work.
The copy displayed here is from the personal library of John James Audubon, given to
Cornell by one of Audubon's direct descendants.
