Jean Baptiste Audebert
1759-1800
Jean Baptiste Audebert invented his own color printing process for the beautiful 0iseaux
dorés. Colors in many of the 190 engraved plates are heightened in gold, and the
copy displayed here is one of 200 with captions printed in gold. Audebert died in 1800
before the work was completed. Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot (1748-1831?), using Audebert's
notes and drawings, prepared most of the text and engraved the plates.
Audebert's Birds of Paradise plates are particularly spectacular.
