Alexander Wilson 1766-1813
Alexander Wilson has been called the "father of American ornithology." The
scientific research and accuracy of description which underlay his nine-volume
American Ornithology made all earlier books on ornithology obsolete. His paintings
were typical of the early 19th century in that they were fixed, stiff portraits of birds,
usually in profile, with little background and with several unrelated species crowded
together on a page. While his individual birds lacked the action and splendor of Audubon's
work, Wilson's unity of text and paintings created a rare and lasting catalog of the birds
of America.
