Selling Ulysses

Joyce took an active role in the production and the promotion of his books. On Ulysses, especially, he concentrated all his energies. In addition to writing furiously to finish the final drafts of the later chapters, Joyce drew up lists of potential subscribers, looked for advance publicity opportunities and, once the novel was published, selected favorable quotes for promotional leaflets and encouraged critics to submit friendly reviews.
