Building Cornell University Library’s Collections

Children’s Literature

Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections contains growing collections of works written for children and materials documenting the history of childhood. A 2004 bequest from award-winning children’s book author Nathan Zimelman, made in honor of his mother, Sarah Zimelman, now provides funds for the acquisition of materials on the history of children’s literature.

Nathan Zimelman was born May 8, 1921, in San Francisco. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939, he worked for many years helping his parents run their family-owned general store in Sacramento. In 1964 he began writing children’s books, publishing more than 30 books between 1964 and 1990.
