Abstract:
The collection documents French gay culture at the dawn of the liberationist period and consists of 6 photo inserts or male
physique photos typical of the period; 22 personal ads, 1957-1972, mostly from the 50s; 15 renewal notices, order cards &
subscription information, 1960-1969; supplements, 1956-1972; and Arcadie Club documents, 1957-1979. The supplements, approximately
250 pages, were produced mainly in mimeographed form. Some went to subscribers to the journal, but the majority were part
of a separate subscription including: "Personal letters" from founder Andrâe Baudry commenting on various topics (politics,
travel, cultural and social issues, standards of comportment, etc.), reports on organizational activities of Arcadie and its
various club incarnations, full transcripts of talks given at Arcadie club meetings, and advertisements for books
dealing with homosexuality.

Arcadie was not only the most important French homosexual publication, but also a homophile social and cultural organization
that maintained a private club in Paris from the mid-50s until the late 1970s. It sponsored social gatherings, talks and cultural
outings. At various points in its history, Arcadie also sponsored activities in the French provinces and in Belgium. The Arcadie
club was known as the Club littâeraire et scientifique des Pays Latins (CLESPALA) and the Paris-Club.

The Arcadie Club documents include 111 items announcing or reporting on activities of the club. Also included are the 1957
club rules; materials describing the facilities of the club; and invitations to cultural events, banquets, and anniversary
celebrations. Among the significant figures mentioned frequently are Arcadie founder Andrâe Baudry, novelists Roger Peyrefitte
and Andrâe du Dognon, and writer Marc Daniel. Also mentioned are the involvement in Arcadie of Jean Cocteau, chanteuse Suzy
Solidor, illustrators Maurice van Moppes and Czanara, writer Marc Oraison and others.
