The Calvert W. Bowman Collection consists of erotic and pornographic prose manuscripts,
photographs, drawings, films, slides, watercolors, and greeting cards collected by
Bowman over a period of more than forty years. Many of the photographs, greeting cards,
and drawings have been pasted into scrapbooks. The theme of the collection is predominantly
gay male, though there are a small number of heterosexual and bisexual topics evident.
Some of the collected photographs are historical, and date from a much earlier time.
The material is exclusively erotic and pornographic, and includes physique photographs
and drawings. The many works of short prose fiction are similarly erotic and pornographic,
but include several more heterosexual pieces. A wide range of sexual motifs is present
in the prose.
