Late in 1821 or early in 1822 itinerant Methodist ministers Reverend Loring Grant and
Asa Bell riding the Geneva Canandaigua circuit, visited an already organized class
in Naples. The church was incorporated in 1822, meeting in the home of an original
member until 1825 when a meeting house was built and dedicated. According to a
church history, revivals in 1831 and 1842 increased the membership necessitating a
larger meeting house which was dedicated in 1851. Almost immediately a subscription
for a chapel to be added to the church was circulated and in the same year it was
built and dedicated. From 1825-1850 the Naples church was a station on the Geneva
Canandaigua circuit, which included Hunt's Hollow and Garling House. After 1867 these
became out-charges to the Naple church. Due to a vehement anti-slavery, pro-John
Brown sermon, Reverend Isaac Gibbard was removed from the pastorship in 1859 or
1860. A trustee, William Marks, was reputedly involved in the underground railroad
which passed through the town.
