Joseph McGinnies was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1915-1934 and speaker
of the Assembly from 1925-1934.
The Joseph McGinnies papers contain microfilm of letters, speeches, and newspaper
clippings dealing with New York State and Chautauqua County politics, mainly during
the years McGinnies was a member of the Assembly. The microfilm includes a copy of
an address by James Farley given at a testimonial dinner for Mr. Farley by the Democratic
Rural County Chairmen's Association, Syracuse, N.Y., September 20, 1941, reprinted
in the Congressional Record; copy of an address by the Permanent Chairman, the Hon.
Joseph A. McGinnies, Speaker of the Assembly, before the Republican State Convention
at Albany, September 26, 1930; copy of an address by McGinnies, George Washington
in the Hearts of His Countrymen, undated; copy of a radio address by McGinnies concerning
the role of New York City in state politics and the problem of representation and
apportionment in the state legislature; congratulations on reaching his 80th birthday.
The collection also contains one undated photograph of McGinnies in the company of
Mayor James J. Walker, and two programs for a Chautauqua County testimonial dinner
held in McGinnies' honor.
