Albert Duane Shaw (December 21, 1841 – February 10, 1901) was born in Lyme, NY to
parents Henry Shaw and Sally Ann (Gardner) Shaw. He served in the Union Army during
the American Civil War before being elected to the New York State Assembly (1866)
and then to the 90th New York State Legislature (1867). He was United States Consul
in Toronto, Canada (1868-1878) and in Manchester, England (1878-1885), and later pursued
several business ventures, including the founding of the Canadian Niagara Power Company
and a planned attempt to build an electric railway from Queenstown to Niagara Falls
Park. Shaw served in Congress from November 6, 1900 until his death on February 10,
1901.
The Albert D. Shaw papers document Shaw's work as U.S. consul in Toronto, as President
of the YMCA of Watertown, NY, and as a business executive. Most of the letters in
the collection are to business associates and are primarily concerned with Shaw's
unsuccessful efforts to raise funds in England to build an electric railroad in Canada
and with the founding of the Canadian Niagara Power Company. The scrapbook consists
of newspaper clippings and assorted memorabilia concerning Shaw's service as U.S.
consul in Toronto.
