Biographical / Historical

Granville Edward Foss, Jr., was born in Methuen, Massachusetts, on July 19, 1867. He married Hattie Crosby Simonds on June 12, 1895. They had four children: Alden S. Foss (born 1896), Granville S. Foss (born 1898), Mary Foss (born 1904), and Caroline Foss (born 1906).
In December 1895 Granville E. Foss, Jr., founded Brightwood Manufacturing Company, North Andover, Massachusetts, in partnership with George Henry Simonds.
Granville E. Foss, Jr., died in 1934.

Biographical / Historical

Brightwood Manufacturing Company was a manufacturer of worsted woolen dress goods and was capable of producing 9,000 yards per day, with an annual capacity of 2,750,000 yards. In 1918 Granville E. Foss, Jr., served as President, General Manager, and Purchasing Agent. Granville's wife, Hattie Simonds Foss, served as Vice-President and his brother-in-law, George H. Simonds, Jr., was the Treasurer.

Includes images of "Willow Brook", the home of Granville E. Foss, Jr., in North Andover, Massachusetts, as well as his first automobile. Also photographs of his family.

Leaning against the front fender is his son Granville Simonds Foss; in his lap is his youngest daughter, Caroline; in the passenger seat are his older son, Alden, and his older daughter, Mary. Image depicts five women posed outside in front of hedge wearing Almafi [?] shawls: left to right, Mary Foss, later Mrs. Hamann; Elizabeth Hevins of Wellesley; Caroline Simonds, later Mrs. Alexander; Caroline Foss, later Mrs. Dawes; Dorothy Tenney, later Mrs. Alden Foss. Mary and Caroline Foss were the daughters of Granville E. Foss Jr., president of Brightwood Mfg. Co., in North Andover. Dorothy Tenney would become the wife of Granville Foss's son Alden Foss. Caroline Simonds was possibly the daughter of George Henry Simonds, the co-founder (along with Granville Foss) of Brightwood. 12.75 x 9 cm.
