ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

The company, located in Graniteville, a locality in Westford, Massachusetts, was founded in 1854 as a partnership of two machinists and inventors, Francis A. Calvert and Charles G. Sargent. It primarily manufactured wool preparatory machinery, including burring, picking, washing, and drying machines. C.G. Sargent also developed and manufactured the "New England comber." C.G. Sargent learned his trade in the Lowell Machine Shop and in a West Chelmsford worsted mill. He had also been a partner in two other firms, Lane and Sargent, and Marvel, Sargent and Company. In 1862 he bought out Calvert's interest; the company eventually became C.G. Sargent and Son.
