ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

A woolen manufacturer in Dexter, Maine, was a family-owned business from its beginnings in the 1820's until its closing in 1975. It was first a carding and fulling operation and was known successively as Abbott, Eaton & Co.; Abbott, Cutler & Co.; and Abbott, Sawyer & Co. In 1831, it became Amos Abbott Co.; it was incorporated in 1899.

All of the men's names and their towns are printed below; includes people from Boston, Philadelphia, Bristol, Pa., Woonsocket, R.I., Providence, and Holyoke, Mass., as well as a number of Maine towns. 24.25 x 19.25 cm. Image depicts the Amos Abbott Company main building in Dexter, Maine, in the center, a three-story clapboard building with a four-story tower topped by a cupola containing a bell. Note the workman standing in the open doorway at the top of the tower. Tall brick chimney attached to the building to the left of the bell tower. Other smaller buildings in the foreground; note the tenter bars set into the hillside in the foreground. Houses can be seen behind the complex in the left and right background; water visible in the right background, probably the east branch of the Sebasticook River. "1891" written in lower left-hand corner, but this print probably generated for 1975 exhibit; see accession folder. Photographed from a hillside overlooking the company; see 0000.620.3 for almost the exact same viewpoint ca1920, and 0000.620.2 for the same view ca. 1874. Amos Abbott Company was a woolen manufacturer. 54.5 x 45.5 cm.
