Biographical / Historical

The American Woolen Company was founded in 1899 under the direction of William M. Wood and Frederick Ayer. In the 1920s the company owned and operated 60 woolen mills, at which time it controlled 20% of the U.S. woolen production. Despite several changes in ownership, the American Woolen Company is still in operation and is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of men's and women's worsted and woolen fabrics. Based in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, the company operates from the 160-year-old Warren Mills, which it acquired from Loro Piana SpA in June 2014.

Photographs of American Woolen Mills overseers' outings, which include men and women playing games.
The company executive photographs include president Francis W. White, vice-president William Muir, purchasing agent Percy Wardwell, general sales manager Charles H. Silver, manager of costs Rory Veitch, treasurer F. S. Connett, vice-president and comptroller George E. McClellan, and public relations executive Jack Barry.
Photographers include Alton Anderson and George Valentine Enell.
