Biographical / Historical

On November 3, 1958 the six airlines filed an agreement with the Civil Aeronautics Board which provided for certain mutual assistance in the event of a strike against one of them. The carriers still operating would make monthly payments of the increased revenues (less added direct expense) to the carrier which was shut down.
Formal objections to the agreement were filed by the International Association of Machinists, the Brotherhood of Hallway and Steamship Clerks, Freight Handlers, Express and Station Employees, the Air Line Pilots Association, International and the six supplemental air carriers, jointly.
The Civil Aeronautics Board, before it approved the agreement, held public hearings on January 14, 1959 to which all interested parties were invited. On January 26, 1959 the Board tentatively approved the agreement. Objections were raised thereafter, and an amendment to the Mutual Aid Agreement was made in 1961.

This collection consists of records relating to hearings on the agreement of six airlines which provided for certain mutual assistance in the event of a strike against one of them. The six airlines were American Airlines, Inc., Capital Airlines, Inc., Eastern Airlines, Inc., Pan American World Airways, Inc., Trans World Airlines, Inc., and United Air Lines, Inc.
