Biographical / Historical

This maritime strike lasted seventy-five days and ivolved three unions and eight companies.
The unions involved were the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (MEBA); the international Association of Masters, Mates and Pilots (MMP); and the American Radio Association. The companies involved included the United States Line Company; Lykes Brothers Steamship Company; Grace Lines, Inc.; Moore-McCormack Lines, Inc.; the Gulf and South American Steamship Company, Inc.; Farrell Lines, Inc.; Prudential Steamship Lines, Inc.; and Broomfield Steamship Company. The American Merchant Marine Institute (AMMI), as bargaining agent, represented the eight government subsidized lines. The negotiations involved pensions, manning problems on automated ships, and the demand by the companies for new grievance-arbitration machinery.

The materials deal chiefly with MEBA and include news releases concerning negotiation efforts of Ralph E. Casey (president, AMMI) and Jesse M. Calhoon (president, MEBA); also news releases conerning various contract proposal rejections and statements made on strike issues. Additionally, reports to MEBA membership; memoranda; and miscellaneous materials. Maritime Trades Department (MTD) items include news releases regarding statements on the strike by Peter M. McGavin (executive secretary and treasurer, MTD), and Paul Hall (president, MTD).
Documents relating to the MMP include a joint statement by Lloyd W. Sheldon (president, MMP), and William R. Steinberg (president, American Radio Association); news releases regarding the MMP agreement with the Tanker Service Committee, ending the tanker industry's 23-day shut-down; and issues of the newspaper THE MASTER, MATE AND PILOT. A National Maritime Union of America (NMU) file includes an NMU proposal for a merger of unions of unlicensed seamen; a joint statement on the amalgamation of the NMU, American Radio Association, MMP, United Marine Division, and Brotherhood of Marine Officers; and clippings. Materials of the American Merchant Marine Institute (AMMI) include news releases and statements by Ralph E. Casey on behalf of the steamship companies which he represented in contract negotiations; and clippings.
