Biographical / Historical

The National Railway Labor Conference [NRLC] was formed in October 1962 to represent the carriers in negotiations with railroad unions. The NLRC is a not-for-profit association and represents member railroads in dealing with representatives of organized employees on a national level in matters involving railroad labor relations; health and welfare benefits; appropriate matters before the courts, Congressional committees, and other governmental bodies; and other matters of interest or concern to its members. Membership is open to any railroad within the continental United States.
This collection contains the Awards of Arbitration Board No. 282 in the matter of the crew consist dispute, which was a dispute between the railroad carriers and their employees' labor union regarding how many men were needed to work a locomotive or yard switcher safely and productively.

Inclusive date range: 1964-1964
Bulk dates: April 1964 - November 1965
This collection consists of National Railway Labor Conference circulars, arranged in chronological order. The circulars are all from the "6-12 series in regard to crew consist special board of adjustment pursuant to Section III of the Award of Arbitration Board No. 282." The circulars each consist of a letter from the administrative secretary of the NRLC and an attached copy of the Arbitration Award between one of the member railroads and either the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen or the Switchmen's Union of North America.
