Biographical / Historical

George Pearlman was a retired machinist who became interested in the controversy over who was the "father" of Labor Day: Matthew Maguire, a machinists' union official, or Peter McGuire, a carpenters' union official. After a substantial amount of research, the results of which are documented in this collection, Pearlman concluded that Matthew Maguire was the originator of the holiday.

Includes the following typed manuscripts by Pearlman: biography of Thomas Wilson Talbot (1849-1892), founder of the International Association of Machinists (1975); an article on the origin of Labor Day and chronology of events pertaining to Labor Day (1973); and a biographical sketch of Matthew Maguire (1850-1917), credited as the founder of Labor Day (n.d.). Also copies of newspaper and periodical articles and U.S. Department of Labor publications relating to the origins of Labor Day (1891-1971).
