A Burmese parabaik manuscript (top) on mulberry paper with engraved wood cover. The Burmese word, parabaik, is a generic term for the locally produced folding books which fold backwards and forwards in concertina fashion. This parabaik manuscript (bottom), created in 1895 at a monastery in Burma, records a section of the Tipitaka, the Buddhist Pali Canon, in the Shan language. |
