Epistles of St. Paul, with Commentary.
Latin manuscript on vellum.
Italy. ca.1100.

In this early manuscript copy of Paul's letters to the Romans, the Corinthians, and the Hebrews, the text is written in a narrow column on the page. Interlinear notes, written in miniscule, offer alternative wordings and rectify omissions found in earlier copies. Ample margins were left by the scribe, anticipating the addition of secondary and supplementary text. This marginalia consisted of interpretation and commentary, and might include the personal observations of a reader. Despite the attempts to record the authoritative version of Paul's letters, each individual and successive manuscript copy of this work took on additional emendations and commentary.
