Formation of Additional National Organizations

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), an organization for students, parents, and teachers that tries to effect positive change in schools, started in Boston in 1989 and quickly grew to one of the nation’s largest LGBT organizations. Records of this group are available at the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley.

In 1992, the Lesbian Avengers formed in New York City to increase lesbian visibility and challenge queer assimilation. In 2000, there were approximately fifty-five chapters across the country.

In 1993, Cheryl Chase founded the Intersex Society of North America to advocate an end to medically unnecessary intersex surgeries.
