American Psychiatric Association Decision

Following on the work of earlier activists, the newly formed NGTF staffed educational booths at American Psychiatric Association (APA) conventions and took an active role in lobbying the organization to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

The American Psychiatric Association announced its momentous decision in December 1973. Photographs taken at the APA press conference show activists listening to the announcement; activist Barbara Gittings approaching the table where APA officials were seated; activists Franklin Kameny, Ron Gold, Barbara Gittings, and Jean O’Leary being interviewed afterwards; and a close-up of Bruce Voeller and Franklin Kameny.
