Dr. Fernow's Ode to the Woodpecker -

Woodpecker, Spare that tree!
  Touch not a single bough!
In youth in sheltered me
  And I'll protect it now;
To cultivate beneath its shade
  Four acres and a cow.
    Be it a Sitka Spruce
Or yet a Douglas fir,
  Or spreading hemlock fine
I am its worshipper!
  Long shall its branches wave
Secure from every ill,
  Though when Columbus ploughed the main
It was a sapling still.
  Peck then some other tree
    And send me in your bill
