Lower Behring Sea - July 17th -

Saw flocks containing thousands of birds flying close to the water -- so dense that they looked something like whales floating, back out, on the surface -- These flocks got more numerous + at one time encircled the boat at a distance of 800 yards or more + seemed to form a black plane off into the distance. At first we didn't know what they were, + there were about as many answers as there were people looking at them -- but Dr. Merriam was right as they afterwards showed themselves to be all fulmars in the dusky plumage.
