BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Alice Axel, also known as Alice Axelle, was for some years the companion of symbolist painter Hélène Azenor.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Manuscript of La fille qui avait été sirène (1934-1935?), later published under the title La fille qui était devenue sirène. With pencil revisions throughout the text, and six original watercolor illustrations by Hélène Azenor. Laid in are a poem, "Par magie," signed by André Salmon; a note to "Alix" Axel from Jean Marais, dated 24 Janvier 1995, reminiscing about a visit Axel had paid to him and Jean Cocteau; and a card from the Exposition internationale feline (an international cat show), Paris, November 1951, awarding first place in several categories to Alice Axel's cat, Yann.
