Although very little historical data is available, the present minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Pulteney and Hammondsport, New York, believes that the Presbyterian Church of Pulteney was organized in 1815, but has never been legally incorporated as a society. In the earlier writings contained in this collection the church was often referred to as the church of Christ in Pulteney or the Church in Pulteney, and in later writings, the Presbyterian Church of Pulteney or the First Presbyterian Church of Pulteney. Between the years 1825 and 1848, the church evidently experienced considerable increases in membership far surpassing the number dismissed to other churches.
