Scrapbooks of Edwin Crowell Stewart of Ithaca, New York State assemblyman, 1894-1895,
and senator, 1896-1898 and 1901-1904. Contain area newspaper clippings and cartoons,
invitations and programs, telegrams, correspondence, and scattered handwritten commentary,
pertaining to Stewart's political career with special references to Tompkins County
and Ithaca city politics and to the passage of the legislation establishing the New
York State Colledge of Forestry, the Veterinary College, and the College of Agriculture
at Cornell University; also unmounted newspaper clippings, c. 1904-1921.

his election to the legislature, Nov. 16, 1893; discussing the dedication of the new
dairy building at Cornell, Jan. 18, 23, 24, 27, 1894, and legislation concerning the
university, which has been enacted by the legislature, Mar. 14, 1894.

Scope and Contents
Of note are a letter from Henry Shaler Williams, Mar. 19, 1894, New Haven, Connecticut,
urging Stewart to support a bill providing for the continuation of the Topographical
Survey of New York State; political letters from Thomas Collier Platt, Apr. 9, 1894,
May 12, 1895; letter from Charles T. Saxton, Clyde, New York, Aug. 11, 1894, asking
Stewart confidentially what his chances for support in Tompkins County would be for
getting the nomination for second place if Levi P. Morton is nominated for governor;
letter to Stewart from Hamilton Fish, Jr., Sept. 23, 1894, congratulating Stewart
on his recent marriage, discussing plans for the county convention to be held in his
own county, and remarking, "If the Assembly is Republican I expect to land the speakership."
Also, letters of congratulation on his (Stewart's) re-election and condolence on the
broken leg he suffered while campaigning.

on his election to the U.S. Senate; mentions failure of Assemblyman [F.E.] Bates "to
perform his duty" and vote for him. Typed resolution of Tompkins County Republican
Committee congratulating Platt, Jan. 23, 1897. Invitation to formal transfer of Grant's
Tomb to New York City, Apr. 1897. Telegram from Platt, Aug. 9, 1898. Clippings pertain
to Ithaca politics and Cornell legislation - veterinary college, military training,
school of forestry, etc. Handwritten copy of Stewart's address as chairman of McKinley
meeting held in the lyceum, Ithaca, Oct. 1896.

20, 1901, and invitations to other Exposition functions including opening of New York
State Building, Aug. 6, 1901, New York State Day, Sept. 18, 1901, and dinner for Governor
