government.

Microfilmed letter book of the Commercial Bank of Lake Erie located in Cleveland,
Ohio, containing copies of the bank's outgoing correspondence, primarily from 1938.
The correspondence embodies dealings with other banks and individuals in the area,
letters to neighboring banks suggesting arrangements for the servicing of each other's
notes, letters pressing for payment of claims, periodic letters to the state of Ohio
indicating that it is entitled to a given number of shares of stock under the terms
of state legislation, periodic statements of the bank's financial transactions (especially
during the year 1816), periodic statement of dividends and statement of receipts.
Among the specific items in the letter book are: acceptance of the charter of the
Commercial Bank of Lake Erie, August, 1816; letter to an Attorney and Counsellor at
Law granting him the full power of attorney to appear on behalf of the Commercial
Bank of Lake Erie in a suit being taken against it by the United States government,
December 21, 1820; letters to the state of Ohio concerning the prohibition of the
circulation of small bills, 1836; bank agrees to loan the state of Ohio up to 150,000
for use in the Ohio Canal Fund, November 12, 1836; letter to the state of Ohio indicating
a willingness to allow the state to deposit canal funds in the Commercial Bank of
Lake Erie, April 27, 1837.
