Scope and Contents
Box sorted into years and placed in bond paper folders; the letters, money notes,
bills, and receipts make up the business and personal correspondence of Wiley H. Scott
and his sons Edwin W., Emmet H., and Silas L. Scott. Concerns various business enterprises
which they undertook, such as the "Scott House", a hotel in Nineveh, N.Y., the Scott
Brewery in Unadilla, road building in the mid-west, and various legal cases in which
they were involved, as a land ejectment suit in Nineveh in 1867, and a contract violation
suit in which they were the defendants in 1875. The Scotts were neighbors of the
Hobbs Family and evidently J.W. Hobbs, acted as their legal counsel. These papers
relating to the Scott family were removed from the Hobbs Bros. Papers (1641) and a
few more relative letters are to be found in the post-nineteen hundred correspondence
of the collection.

Copy of Condensed Description of Deed for land in Randolph Co., Va.
|
date unknown | |
Scope and Contents
Copy of Deed - letter on back from "Jamie" to Edwin. "Brother Edwin" from Silas,
Chicago - has rented farm to Hamilton Dean. About 5,000 secessionists captured and
brought to Chicago - came over our road - comfortably clothed, but few with overcoats.
Kentuckians and Tennesseans appear to be glad they were captured. Not so of Mississippians.
All of rank and file very ignorant, say they have been misled, they expected to be
abused and jeered at in a free state but have been treated kindly. A majority of
our volunteers from this state, Indiana to Missouri no more intelligent than the sec'y.
Most go for pay and not for any particular principle...comments on E's recent marriage.
Decided to bury his objections and E's marrying so young. Might buy his father's
Dickinson lot and leave RR where he is now working.
