Liberty Hyde Bailey established the Department of Drawing in 1908 with William. C.
Baker as its first professor. In 1917 the department was dissolved and its work divided
between Landscape Art and Rural Engineering. In 1922 Landscape Art became part of
the new Department of Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture.
This collection features art projects and assignments created in the studio and left
behind by students. Mann Library acquired these artworks when Prof. Jack Lambert informed
the library the studio was closing due to the renovation of the Mann Library building.
Included in the collection are proofs and scratchboards done by former instructors
Elizabeth Burckmyer and Ann Elliot. Prof. Burckmyer illustrated "The Makers of Honey,"
written by Mary Geisler Phillips, and Ann Elliot designed brochures for various academic
departments at Cornell. The collection also contains a portrait of Professor Baker.
