BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Professor of classics, Cornell University.
James Hutton, Cornell University Class of 1924, was a joint editor of CORNELL STUDIES IN CLASSICAL PHILOLOGY, and published several books, articles and reviews.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Manuscripts of unpublished writings including poems, travel journals and essays, speeches and lectures; the text of his Master's Essay; THE GREEK ANTHOLOGY IN ENGLAND; THE POETICS OF ARISTOTLE (published posthumously); notes on the Latin Epigram, and other projects; preliminary drafts and reprints of the numerous published articles and reviews; and a copy of the festschrift in his honor, with relevant letters. Also, annotated copy of POETRY AND POETICS FROM ANCIENT GREECE TO THE RENAISSANCE with letters to Hutton from contributors; and a catalog of books by Eugenie Droz, one of Hutton's correspondents. Correspondence includes family letters, many written to or from his mother, dating from their residence in Walton, from his undergraduate years at Cornell, and from Europe, Feb.-Sept. 1937; letters from boyhood friends and teachers who were friends and neighbors; photocopies of letters to Richard Robinson from 1946 when Robinson left Cornell to go to Oxford, to 1979; letters from friends, colleagues, and students. Professional and business letters about the Cornell University Department of Classics, the Renaissance Society of America, meetings, and publications; pencilled drafts of letters by Hutton; and postcards written to Lane Cooper when he was away on vacation. Correspondents include Harry Caplan, Harold Cherniss, Marcel Françon, Edwin Howard, Gordon M. Kirkwood, Paul Oskar Kristeller, Walter MacKellar, Charles G. Osgood, Isidore Silver, Friedrich Solmsen, B. A. Van Gröningen, and Dorothy Tyler.
Handwritten journals, notebooks, and diaries, 1914-1958, some years much more complete than others; school and college notebooks and essays; records including report cards from school in Walton, New York to 1920; and some financial records. Also, photographs, photograph albums, and negatives.
Photocopies of letters to Professor Isidore Silver (Brown University, the University of Connecticut, and Washington University, St. Louis) concerning his research and writing on Ronsard; study abroad, fellowships,posts available at Cornell and elsewhere; translations and interpretations of Greek and Latin texts. Also, references to the activities of various Cornell faculty members and to former students of Hutton; to reviews of a work by Gilbert Highet, 1951-52; and to the Residential Club fire, 1965.
Typescripts, manuscripts, and notes for THEMES OF PEACE IN RENAISSANCE POETRY, Hutton's last book. Also, JAMES HUTTON: A MEMOIR, by Mary F. Boynton and Dorothy W. Tyler, 1990.
