COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

Recollections (13 pp. typescript) based on dictation that Cornelius Betten, dean of the Cornell University faculty (1932-45), gave to Mrs. Argetsinger while she was his secretary or on statements that he made following their marriage, describing how hotelman John McFarlane Howie, Howard B. Meeks, Betten, professors of home economics Beulah Blackmore, Flora Rose, and Martha Van Rensselaer, and others contributed to the establishment of the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell; how financial problems of the Cornell Cosmopolitan Club and Leonard Elmhirst's friendship with Dorothy Straight led to the founding of Willard Straight Hall; and how President Edmund Ezra Day was unsuccessful in an attempt to abolish the hygiene requirement at Cornell. Also, several anecdotes concerning the entomological research of Betten and Professor James Needham and the friendship of the two men.
